Once Around The Block

After the ‘A Short Album’ by Edinburgh beat maker Jaisu back in early September, the Astral Black label run by Jon Phonics has recently released another collection of superb, low-end, instrumental hip hop. Out ahead of a vinyl single next year, the second in a series of introductory cassette releases features ten tracks of highly inventive beats and pieces – taking in grime, R&B, rave and new wave – from Manchester based Opal Block, who we are reliably informed was ‘raised on a diet of analogue synths and 8-bit midi programming software’. Titled ‘Tyson’, it’s a pretty heavy hitting debut outing as you might expect, and is available direct from the label.
