The Maze And Matrix

More than enough was said on other pages about the muddled sounds of ‘Ghettoville’ by Actress aka Darren Cunningham when it was released the beginning of the year on Werkdiscs. Bringing an end to a cycle of four album releases that began with the broken techno of ‘Hazyville’, the agitated, abstract patterns took some figuring out and saw the London producer at his most ambivalent with a darkly lit mix of groove heavy mix of disassembled grime, house and hip hop that proved, in time, to be a natural end to a project that had spawned the well regarded modern classics ‘Splaszh’ and ‘R.I.P’. His forthcoming contribution to the DJ Kicks series on !K7 which is due next month was always going to be an intruiging proposition and it opens in fine style by stitching together Greg Beato as Breaker 1 2 with ‘Elegant, and Never Tiring’ from trance deconstructionist Lorenzo Senni, before going on to include artists such as Chez Damier, Ron Trent, Autechre, Mark Fell and John Beltran. Of his own contribution ‘Bird Matrix’ which was made just after he completed the final album, Cunningham has said ‘my studio was going through a transition, so I was testing all the equipment, and that was one of the first tunes that came out of those experiments’.
